For so long, Africans have been desperate to see the Africa they want, for so many years, they have been longing and yearning to see the Africa they have never seen. The need, zeal and the want started way back in the 19th centuary, when both Africans in diaspora and those on the african continent put together their efforts and massively to end slavery and the slave trade during the colonization of the African continent.
It started when the idea that people of the African descent should have common culture, history and should work together throughout the world popped up in the mind of africans and I know they must have been thinking about a better Africa, this is the Africa we want. The need didn’t end there, it continued and surfaced in Bandung the capital of Indonesia in 1955,when leaders from Africa, Asia, Arab and Latin America countries met and established the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and I guess bright Kwame Nkrumah and Gamel Abdel Nasser might have come up with the idea, such that Africa sides with neither of the ideological blocks of the east or west for effective development of Africa, This is the Africa we want. The Africa we want was spoken about in 1945 during the 5th pan african conference (Manchester Conference) , when negroes like W.E Debois, George Piedmond, Macknon and african leaders such as Peter Abraham, Julius Kabarange Nyerere, and I guess, Kwame Nkrumah was among them, when they met in England and re-empahsied on the importance of united Africa, where they said, “United Africa could be a big force for good in the world”, it was spoken about by Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah and Ethiopia’s Haile Sellasie and well stipulated in the objectives of the then Organisation of Africa Union (OAU), which emphasis on promotion of peace and security, this is the Africa we want.
It was spoken about and put in an impressive and ambitious plan on 25th may 2013 during the golden jubilee celebration of the now Africa Union(AU) and termed as ” The African Agenda 2063″ which aims to see Africa with democratic political systems and accelerated economic growth, This is the Africa we want. It is designed in the aims and objectives of the African regional integrations of the East Africa Community (EAC), Economic Organisation of West Africa States (ECOWAS), and the Common Market for East and South Africa (COMESA) which aims to create a self sufficient, reliant and industrialized Africa which discovers, exploits, purifies and sells her resources on her regional common markets, Africa with common monetary policies and common currency, This is the Africa we want. Our african leaders talked about it, John Pombe magufuli of Tanzania talked about it in 2015,Paul Kagame of Rwanda spoke about it I know, President Yuweri Kaguta Museveni might have been speaking about it since 1986, This is the Africa we want, Cyril Ramaphosa of south Africa spoke about in Pretoria and cape town during his campaign, Mohammed Abdullahi of Somalia spoke of it in 2017,Isaias Afwerki of Somalia has been speaking about the Africa we want, Abdel Fattah of Egypt in 2014 talked about it, Just like Kwame Nkrumah, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana spoke of the African we want , Salva kiir Mayardit of south Sudan must have thought of it that is why recently he said he now wants peace, This is the Africa we want, Patrice Talon of Benin, Rich Marc Christian of Burkina Faso and other many Africa leaders spoke of the Africa we want in their manifestos , This is the Africa we want.
The Africa you want, I want and the Africa we want is stated in the pan african vision of “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens, representing a dynamic force in the international arena”, it is well stipulated in the aims and objectives of the Intergovermental Authority on Development (IGAD) which states about a continent which promotes programmes and projects to achieve continental food security and sustainable development, a continent with harmonised macro-economic policies and programmes in the social, technological and scientific fields. The Africa we want is stated by the United Nations (UN) in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which is the “Blue print” it talks about No poverty, zero hunger, Good health and well being, Quality Education and how to achieve it, this is the Africa we want.
We want a continent which can silence the gun but not being silenced by the gun, Africa that can possibly generate its power from the roaring waters of river Congo or any other african river as many may also suggest to lighten our Africa and start talking about massive industrialization, Africa which produces what it consumes and consumes what it produces, a continent which can not longer see and identify itself as fragmented states but United States of Africa (USA), people working towards a common purpose, This is the Africa we want. The Africa we want is one with an education system which preserves, our african cultures, history and heritage, with a learning system which produces human resource who are fully equipped on how to work on the african continent, a continent with strong institutions to eradicate and defy all forms of corruption, bribery and conflicts at all setting, a continent which look at it self as a solution to its problems, Africa which empowers women, youth and make them realise that their ideas and opinions are as important as somebody else’s, This is the Africa we want.
The Africa we want has been spoken about in the 19th centuary 20th centuary and now in the 21st centuary, but it seems like we only achieved it in dreams and written documents but not in reality, but it is time to now achieve the real Africa that we want, We have all what it cost to create the Africa we want now!
